Private or Semi-Private Ranges near Charleston?
« on: February 16, 2007, 03:05:08 PM »
I live near Charleston (north up 77) and usually go to Kanawha State Forest to shoot.
Let's just say No range officer plus questionable crowd = not so safe range conditions!

Used to belong to Putnam County Gun Club (pretty nice range) but it was a long drive. When they raised the fees I dropped my membership.

Where else is there to shoot around here? I shoot handguns, rifles up to 300 yds or so and wouldn't mind bustin some clays every once in a while.

I know there's a place on Doc Bailey Rd near Cross Lanes, anyone have details...fees etc?

Maybe we should start a list of places to shoot...I'll start.....

Kanawha State Forest, Charleston - Public, closes at dusk, 8 or so covered benches with berms at 25 and 50yds and mountain as backsto at 100yds or so. Crowd is mixed from old-timers to Desert Eagle toting gangsters. Crowded on weekends.

Frozen Camp WMA, East of Ripley (Jackson Co.) off Rt33, 6 or so covered benches with berms and mine belt target backers at 50,100 and 200 yds approx., rarely crowded except for weeks leading up to deer rifle season. Good fishing right across the road.

Putnam County Gun Club, Eleanor, 100 yd Pistol range with reactive targets and a clay-thrower for the shotguns, 300 yd rifle range with approx. 7-8 concrete benches and framed target backers at 50,100,200 and 300 yds. Also a nice and ever-expanding Cowboy action area in the bottom. I think the fees are like $75 a year now. They shoot Bullseye and some Defensive IPSC or IDPA (one or the other?)pistol here too. Used to be a High Power rifle match but I think that is now defunct.

Admin,
maybe star a Sticky thread for this kind of info.

Anyone with private land ranges that would host an informal shoot feel free to post a message.

Keep em coming and I'll probably consolidate it on one page on the main web site and put a sticky from the top of this forum to there.  Appreciate the suggestion.

I'm hoping to have a small range built by late spring. An enclosed building with 2-3 benches to shoot from(thru windows in on end of the building). I use to shoot alot of rimfire matches and our private range closed down so I have decided to carry it on myself. I have about 56 acres so room is something I do have. I plan on having at least 100yds availabe. I will update once I get everything complete.

Sounds nice Martin, I've got a few guys who would shoot a little rimfire benchrest.
Have a Winny 52 and an old Mossberg 44 to try out!

There's a public range off the Wallback exit I 79...haven't been there yet myself but a co worker said that it was new and pretty decent. 7-8 covered benches, berms at 25, 50, and 100 yards. No RO so you're on your own.  If I make it up there in the near future I will post additional info.

From Charleston...I 79 N, get off at Wallback. Turn rt, approx 200 yards. Turn left, sign says Public Hunting area. Road to the range is pretty well marked from that point. There's a lake out there too.

Unless you go on a weekday or very early, Kanawha State Forest can be dangerous.

I just joined and think if you start a new gun range, I would be interested Martin. I live in Putnam County and did belonged to the club in Eleanor but the cost is pretty high. I enjoy shooting about anything. Just taught my grandchild how to shoot. Kanwaha Forest is not a good place to go, pretty scary.
